Benavista Classic November 2007
The November 2007 Benavista Classic was played from the 4th to 10th November. This year the sun shone for the whole of the Classic which enabled the organisers to finish the competition a day early. The competition caused some surprises and a few shocked players, who went out of the competition earlier than they expected! Unfortunately due to a mix up Phil Coates and Wendy Pemberton had a bye in their semi-final, as one of their opposition failed to turn up. The other pairs semi-final was played between Pat & Alex Hanton and Ted Holmes & Sandy Guthrie. After a slow start Alex & Pat pulled ahead and Sandy & Ted conceded the match on the 14th end. Both triples semi-finals were conceded on the 17th end, which meant the finals would be played between Dennis King, Peter Fry & Neil Marshall and Alan Turner, Brian Todd & Mike Detheridge.
The Pairs were contested between Phil Coates & Wendy Pemberton of Benavista and Pat & Alex Hanton of Superbowl. It was a very closely fought match with only 1 shot difference right up to the 14th end. Then on the 16th end the Hantons pulled ahead 18 - 13, from then on Phil and Wendy were unable to score a point. The match finished with the Pat & Alex Hanton winning 21 -13.

The Triples final was between Dennis King, Peter Fry & Neil Marshall of Benavista and Alan Turner, Brian Todd & Mike Detheridge of Benalmadena. This match started evenly, but, on the 6th end Mikes team picked up a 4 and they managed to maintain a 4 point lead up to the 12th end when they got another 4 this left Neils team with a uphill task. (pst! as Mike did not try to bribe me, I have to tell you, that, on the 14th end he sent down a wrong bias wood, which goes to prove even the best make mistakes!) The final result was 23 - 13 to Mike Detheridge, Brian Todd & Alan Turner.

At the end of the competition President Tony Farmer thanked all those who had helped to make this a memorable competition, Hughie Holgate the owner of the Club who sponsored the Competition, the staff of the Bowls Club for keeping everyone fed and watered, Diane Needham for making so many people part with their money for the raffle, Doreen Fabron for organising the quiz, the Umpires, and especially Geoff Land and Russell Roper for organising the competition, Ros Wright for writing out all the score cards and all the other people who had helped during the last 7 days. He said, without all these people who work so hard behind the scenes the competition could not take place!!
The very successful raffle with over 50 prizes. The big prize of the TV was won by Wendy Youngs.
