The Costa del Sol Summer Championships ended in an all Benavista and Superbowl final.

The Mens Singles Finals was played on Saturday Morning because Sam Hughes was in 4 finals.Sam Hughs played Tony Frowd in the Men’s singles finals on Saturday morning because both Sam and Tony had to play in the triples final in the afternoon. The competitors were closely matched and what turned out to be the final end Tony had a 20-19 lead. Sam got 2 shots and Tony was unable to take them off and the match ended 21-20 in Sam’s favour. This meant that Sam Hughes of Benavista was the Men’s Singles Champion 2007 for the 3rd year in a row. Well done Sam!

The Ladies Singles Final was between Angie Knight and Kate Morris, it started evenly but then Angie started pulling away and finally won the match 21-12. It was a good match played in a very good spirit with Angie knight of Benavista becoming the Ladies Singles Champion 2007.

The Triples Final was between Sam Hughes, Bert Campbell & Steve McManus and Denise & John Howlett & Tony Frowd. This turned out to a very slow match played with skill and a lot of deliberation by the skips. The shot wood changed with nearly every wood that was played. At the 13th end the score was 16-6 in favour of the Benavista team, and after losing 1 shot on the 14th Benavista continued to pull ahead. The Superbowl team conceded on the 16th when the score stood at  20-7 in favour of Benavista. The Triples Champions 2007 are Sam Hughes, Bert Campbell and Steve McManus of Benavista.

The Pairs Final was played between Sam Hughes & Bert Campbell and Tommy Smith & Terry Barrett. Halfway through the match Sam & Bert were down 12-8 and Tommy & Terry seemed to have the game under control. But Sam & Bert pulled back and on the 14th picked up a 4 to take the lead 15-13. On the 16th end Sam & Bert picked a 3 making the score 18-14. They went into the last end 18-15 and Tommy and Terry could only get a single shot. So with the final score 18-16 Sam Hughes & Bert Campbell of Benavista became The Pairs Champions 2007.

The Fours Final was played between Jan & Steve McManus, Sam Hughes & Bert Campbell and Tommy & Naomi Smith & Maureen & Terry Barrett. Unfortunately after playing some wonderful bowls during the run up to the final the Superbowl Team (in their words) just could not get it together. After the the 3rd end they were 12-0 down, on the 8th end a big cheer went up in the crowd when they picked up their 1st point and we thought they might make a come back. But things got even worse and they conceded on the 10th end with score standing at 25-1 to Benavista. Thus making Jan & Steve McManus, Sam Hughes and Bert Campbell of Benavista the Fours Champions 2007.

Now you may have noticed that Sam Hughes became Champion in all 4 disciplines the only exception to a clean sweep was the Ladies Championship perhaps next year he will don a skirt and try for the lot!! Well done Sam!! Bert Campbell won 3 titles, Steve McManus 2, and Angie Knight & Jan McManus 1 each.

The President Tony Farmer thanked everyone concerned and especially Geoff Land the Competition Secretary who was helped by Russell Roper. The Staff in the Club House were thanked for keeping every one fed and watered and the ladies of the social committee and in particular Diane Needham, Diana King and Maggie Ogden for doing the Raffle.
