Official opening of the New Green
The official opening of the New Green took place on Saturday 8th September. We started the occasion with our President Tony Farmer saying :-
Last September there were many rumours going around the club, that, at the same time next year we would not have a bowling club, and the greens would no longer exist!! How wrong can you get! Here we all were at the opening of our new facilities, and looking forward to a new season of bowling on what could be the best green on the Costa del Sol.
During the summer months the bowlers who live here, had been entered in the Summer League and the Team 11 competitions, and had been successful in both, with the Benavista Panthers winning the summer league and Benavista Tigers winning the Team 11.
There had also been a club summer league which was won by Sandy Guthrie.
Tony also said that the Federation had shown confidence in the club by awarding us the Costa del Sol Summer Championships, and in January we were jointly hosting the Andalucian Championships with Superbowl.
He then presented the prizes for the club summer league.
Then we got down the fun competition Dennis King had arranged, we played 6 ends and then stopped for food.
After a fantastic buffet, which was arranged by the social committee, who had persuaded every member of the club to supply something for the table, we changed positions in our trips and also changed rink for a further 6 ends. We then had another short break for more refreshments, after which, we once again changed positions and rinks and played a further six ends.
Once the competition was over a spider was organised. When the winner was announced there was a “police” raid and Roy Wilkins was detained and told to “spread them” against the Club House wall
and searched for ‘drugs’, by WDC Angie Knight, who patted him down and seemed to be thoroughly enjoying herself (Roy didn’t complain either) and PC Dennis King, whilst Riot Police Lady Doreen Fabron kept the crowd at bay. Unfortunately, the excitement was too much for Peter Fry who suffered a “Heart attack”
and medics were called for and Nurses Alan Bates and Tony Farmer leapt into action.
They tried to revive Peter by pumping air up his shorts with a stirrup pump, then they tried heart massage but could not find his heart,
so as a final resort they decided to give mouth to mouth resuscitation. But, before they could start Peter ‘miraculously’ recovered
and ran off the green hotly pursued by Alan and Tony. This diversion allowed Police suspect Roy to escape chased by the Bowling Police.
When the fun was over the prizes were presented and the members enjoyed a few more drinks and a lot more chat!!
Peter Fry.
